Mobile International Airport receives 2026 Glass Magazine Award
Innovation Glass is proud to announce that the VS1 curtain walls at the Mobile International Airport received the 2026 Glass Magazine Best Protective Glazing Project Award. The 35,000-square-foot facade was recognized for achieving transparency with hurricane protection.
The design team, HOK and FSB Architects, envisioned expansive glass walls to create a welcoming atmosphere for travelers. A conventional curtain wall system was initially considered for the curving facade scope, but the significant 30’ vertical span was more efficiently realized with a VS1 solution of unreinforced, vertical aluminum mullions and pre-assembled cassette glass panels.
“This project stands out because the protective glazing had to perform at a very high level while still creating an open, transparent terminal experience,” said Glass Magazine judge Austin Zajichek. “The impact-rated façade, long clear spans and successful high-wind testing show that safety was fully built into the system without making the building feel heavy or overbuilt.”
Installed by Metropolitan Glass Company, the VS1 curtain wall also features a staggered glass joint pattern, a detail now achieved on four HOK-designed projects using the standard VS1 kit of parts.
We appreciate the recognition from Glass Magazine and look forward to our next glass wall collaboration.
