Four-story glass curtain wall atrium
VS1 facade-skylight-facade transition

Designed by HOK, this new healthcare building in New Jersey features a VS1 atrium wall that spans from level 1 to 4. Notably, this scope includes a VS1 façade-to-skylight-to-façade transition condition. The lower façade from floors 2 to 3 spans 20’, then turns 90° to a flat skylight, and then transitions a second time to another vertical wall spanning 16’ from level 3 to 4. This unique scope is achieved with a custom 8” T-shaped mullion with vertical cassette frames, and at level 3 lateral struts tie the mullions back to slab for intermediary support. Custom trim extrusions at the sill wrap to the inside of the curb.
The standard VS1 kit of parts can seamlessly accommodate a transition from façade to roof and—as shown in this case—back to facade again. This approach can achieve a cutting-edge glass cube aesthetic while also significantly streamlining vendor contracts for contractors as both the façade and skylight packages can be sourced from a single entity.
The VS1 scope also includes entries on either side of the building with 20’ wide inside-outside VS1 vestibules with swinging and sliding doors. Finally, Innovation glass supplied fittings and AESS Cat. 4 steel for the canopies at one of the entrances.
